THE story

Sewing Arts Lab was founded in 2015 with a simple mission: teach people how to make things with their hands. What started as a summer workshop for young students in Silver Lake has grown into a full studio offering year-round classes, summer camps, and private instruction for students ages 6 through adult.

We believe that sewing is more than a craft — it's a creative practice that builds patience, problem-solving skills, and genuine confidence. Our students don't follow cookie-cutter kits. They learn to draft patterns, choose fabrics, operate machines, and bring their own designs to life.

The lab is a working studio, not a polished classroom. Fabric scraps on the floor, machines humming, music playing, students helping each other figure out a tricky seam — that's what it sounds like here. We keep our student-to-teacher ratio at 6:1 because real learning happens when someone is right there with you.

Skills for Life

MACHINE SEWING

From threading the bobbin to constructing full garments. Students learn on real machines — domestic and industrial — not toys.

Pattern drafting and cutting

PATTERN MAKING

Learn to draft, modify, and cut patterns. Understand how flat fabric becomes three-dimensional clothing.

Textile dyeing and surface design

TEXTILE ARTS

Dyeing, printing, collage, and mixed-media techniques. Explore the creative side of fabric beyond garment construction.

Fashion design process

FASHION DESIGN

Concept to runway. Students design collections, build pieces, and present their work at our annual fashion show.

Every instructor at Sewing Arts Lab brings real-world making experience to the table — not just theory. They've constructed garments, managed production, and exhibited their own creative work.
